May 12, 2008 Update on School Social Work Salary Supplement

April 30, 2008 Update on School Social Work Salary Supplement

UPDATE ON SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK SALARY SUPPLEMENT

Below is an update on what we are working on in regards to the Salary Supplement for School Social Workers.  Although things do change moment to moment around the session, here is the latest:

TWO PLANS ARE IN THE WORKS - the FIRST

Rep. Joe Harrison is going forward with his HB 817 to fund the SLP salary supplement.
HB 817 will be scheduled to be heard before the Appropriations Committee - he will let us know  the date as soon as it is scheduled .
He has asked the staff of  the Appropriations  Committee to prepare  two amendments he hopes to make to his bill while it is being heard in committee .
One amendment is to correct the $1,000 to $5,000 salary supplement, as $1000.00 was a typo on the original bill.
Second amendment is to add school social workers to the bill.

As soon as we have the date for that hearing, we will let send out an email to let you know so that those who are interested in testifying before the committee can plan to come to the Capitol.

IN THE MEANTIME, in an effort to assess representatives' support of SLPs and SSWs salary supplements,  Rep. Joe  Harrison is asking his colleagues in the House to sign on as co-authors of HB 817.  He would also like your help, contact your Representative specifically requesting that they sign-on as co-authors  to Representative Joe Harrison's HB 817.  Be sure to explain the amendments that Representative Harrison  - THIS NEEDS TO BE DONE IMMEDIATELY AND REPORTED BACK TO the Chapter Office ASAP.   We are at the Capitol today working with Representative Harrison to obtain co-authors on HB 817.

The SECOND

Is that requests for amendments to HB 1 must be made no later than May 2, 2008  so, if we are not successful with a sufficient number of co-authors to HB 817, Representative Joe Harrison will request amendments to HB 1 to fund the SLPs and SSWs salary supplements.

Again, HB 1 when HB 1 is scheduled for a public hearing, we will notify you of the date(s) public testimony will be taken regarding the Department of Education's budget portion so that those who would like to testify can plan on being at the  Capitol.
